The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Whether you've seen Holmes incarnated
by Jeremy Brett or Robert Downey Jr.,
it's worth returning to the original
stories for this most original of
detectives. The mysteries are clever,
the camaraderie between Holmes and
Watson lends a touch of humanity, and
the foggy Victorian London is almost a
physical character itself. Open the book
to find yourself in 1899, on a dark Baker
Street, with Holmes and Watson racing to
a hansom cab because once again, "The
game is afoot!"

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey

This science-fiction epic starts off the Expanse series with a bang. The book manages to combine elements of a classic noir detective series, a running spaceship battle thriller, and a mutated alien virus horror tale to great success. There are memorable, fun characters, and it's impossible to find a stopping point; every chapter is a cliff hanger. A fast and exciting read, and highly recommended.

His Dark Materials Trilogy by Phillip Pullman

This complex series of fantasy novels written for Young Adults and Adults alike starts with the story of Lyra Belacqua. In a world of good and evil, angels and spectres, there’s a lot of gray area to explore, and Lyra doesn’t hesitate to do just that. Sprawling across three beautifully written, heart wrenching, and pulse-quickening books, this story of love and loss is an essential starter for any Fantasy or YA lover.
